How are draperies opened? by hand or cord?

I'm having some pinch pleated draperies made for 3 rooms in my house. I do not want to use one of those ugly white metal traverse rods but I'm not finding any decorative ones. Why is this? are traverse rods outdated?

The drapes will be opened/closed often and not only will it be a pain to manually open/close them but they will get dirty over time. Are wands what people are using these days? I can't imagine those w/ large windows wanting to open/close by hand. We're using JC Penney for the drapes and the only decorative traverse rods I can find still require manually opening the drapes. thanks!
