Should we replace an antique front door?
We have a 1920's Colonial house with likely the original door, sidelights, and transom. They are French style with grills, original door knob and skeleton lock, but obviously newer deadbolt.
Down side is the door is 32 inches wide, some glass panels have been replaced with plexiglass that is scratched, and the door itself is as thin as an interior door.
To top it off, the door leaks cold air in.
We are thinking about replacing it with an energy star 36 inch door, side lights, and transom. The exact same French panel look, except with panels and blinds in between the glass.
Because this is not our last home, I worry what the next owners will think.
Sounds like a lovely door but not very functional. I'd replace it with something better, as close as you can get to the original look, and keep the old one around. Will the old one fit any of your interior doorways? Might look nice there. Get the plexi replaced with glass. You can get an astonishing variety of glass types at stained glass shops and even some regular glass places so you should be able to get a period-appropriate kind.
