How to expand a Service Panel to add more breakers?
When I open my electric service panel, I have 4 extra pop outs to add new breakers at the bottom. However, when I remove the top panel, I see the hot bus bar does not go down any further than the existing breakers... So, no room left for more breakers. I want to install a double pole surge arrestor at top of panel (lightning fried my electronics last week). Is there a way to expand the hot bus bar? or do I have to replace the entire bar? It's a square D panel. Please help. Thx.
If this is a home line or SQ D type QO either way you can get tandem or piggy breakers 15/15/ or 15/20 or 20/20 you get the idea. Move what you can to add the surge protector to to the top of the panel.This will still protect you and you do not have to add a new panel.
I will tell you this that there is no surge protector in the world made today that can deter a direct hit from Lightning, and do not think that this may protect you completely from a hit. They do help but lightning can do what it wants to electronic devices depending on what it hits and where it exits.
I have seen homes and businesses as well with high dollar surge protectors and lightning still so bad damage.
