Thermal Lined Curtain

I am needing thermal drapes. Do the foam backed ones really work, or should I get lined ones? Differences?
I have several rooms with windows that allow the severe summer heat to pour into my house. I've found a good deal on some foam-backed thermal drapes; however, I've heard that the lined ones work much better. If they don't work MUCH better, I'll be happy with the foam-backed ones. Do the foam ones work at all? I have only recently even HEARD of thermal curtains and am unfamiliar with but need them desperately. Thanks!!
Okay, more info. Let me clarify that I am trying to keep out as much heat as possible while still allowing as much light as possible to come through. However, I would like there to be a noticeable difference in temperature with what I get. What can I get that will perform this task for me?
I've used foam backed drapes and they worked great for keeping the heat out as well as keeping the room dark at night for sleeping. They also muffle noise.
